In his scores of Rachmaninoff’s Second and Third Piano Concertos as well as his Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini the Dutch conductor Willem Mengelberg (1871-1951) meticulously preserved the composer’s own tempi as played in concert performances that took place within but a few years of the music’s creation.
