Rachmaninoff Society
OUR PUBLICATIONS
The Bells
Society members receive a professionally produced journal, The Bells, normally published twice a year. This has replaced the quarterly Newsletter which the Society published until 2007. Issue No.1of The Bells focused on Piano Concerto No.3 (to follow up on our 2007 Conference), while the current issue concentrates on the Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. In addition to exclusive material (e.g. previously untranslated Russian writings), The Bells contain articles by leading Rachmaninoff experts such as Robert Threlfall, Geoffrey Norris and Elger Niels. Some of the articles are illustrated by musical extracts which can downloaded from the members-only section of this site.
Regular 'Newsflash'
Members also receive a twice-yearly 'newsflash', which keeps them up-to-date with recent and forthcoming activities, and contains news, views, and reviews.
A 20th Century Life
"After his walk he came to the music room and started practising, always beginning with scales ... The house had to be completely quiet, but who would have had it otherwise?"
The memoirs of Rachmaninoff's niece Sophia Vladimirovna Satina (1915-1996) contain fascinating reminiscences of the composer but also tell the story of Miss Satina's own eventful life - a life which, as Harold Tillek says in his foreword, had 'epic qualities of courage, patience and endurance.'

In Search of Rachmaninoff A narrative poem by Valeria Z. Nollan
"Can you hear me ? Like Dante's Pilgrim seeking Beatrice I search for you in a life that requires your song "
Professor Valeria Z. Nollan is Chair of the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee. She says of her new book: 'In Search of Rachmaninoff records in poetic form my lifelong connection with Sergei Rachmaninoff's identity. I wrote it in St. Petersburg, but it had been writing itself for many years. The poem treats themes of Russian emigration, the creative process, and illness and recovery, but most of all it is concerned with the beauty of Rachmaninoff's music and the triumph of his life.'
